Why I Do This Work

I came to the United States in 1987 and learned English as a young adult. I worked full time through college, through a biology degree, and through law school at night. I came here as a political refugee. Starting over is not new to me. It is what most of the people who walk into my office are about to do.

I went to law school to learn the law. I do not think most divorcing couples need a lawyer. I say that as a lawyer. I built a mediation practice because I watched what the law does to families when it is used as a weapon. In court, a judge who has never met your children decides where they sleep on Tuesdays. That is not justice. That is one more stranger making decisions about your life.

Mediation or the collaborative path is not right for every family. If it is not right for yours, I will tell you. Some people truly need lawyers and a judge to bring order when chaos takes over. Most couples do not. With help and guidance, they can make these decisions themselves, and they make better ones than a court would.

At our mediation center, ninety-nine percent of our cases resolve without a courtroom. That number is the whole point.

Background

Attorney Salvari Green was admitted to practice law in Connecticut and before the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut in 2001. She began as a divorce and family lawyer at the Rocky Hill firm of the late Richard D. Tulisano, Esq. She then opened her own mediation practice in divorce and family law, with a sharp focus on divorce mediation, collaborative divorce, and work as a Guardian ad Litem, a person the court appoints to look out for a child’s best interests. She led the effort to form the Collaborative Divorce Professionals Group.

For the past 21 years, she has chosen to limit her practice to divorce mediation and collaborative divorce. She believes the words “family” and “litigation” do not belong in the same sentence. In her view, mediation and collaboration are the way to resolve most family disputes with integrity and dignity intact, and she spends a great deal of her time teaching people that this path exists.

Professional Memberships

Attorney Green is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections, the Connecticut Council for Divorce Mediation, the New England Chapter of the Association for Conflict Resolution, the Collaborative Divorce Professionals Group, the Collaborative Divorce Team of Connecticut, and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals.
